On January 1, 2001 Alberta restructured its electricity market deregulating generating plants and putting in the mechanism of long-term power purchase arrangements.
Alberta's electricity system is owned and operated by a mix of investor-owned and municipally owned companies, not by the Alberta government.
Alberta has generating capacity of approximately 12,000 megawatts (MW) with about 10,000 MW that could be available to the Alberta Integrated Electrical System. Alberta also has access to about 1,000 MW of generation from neighboring jurisdictions. Alberta’s peak demand in 2006 was 9,961 MW – up from 7,408 MW in 1999. About 4,451 MW of new generation was added to the Alberta’s power supply between 1998 and the end of 2007. An addition of 7,189 MW of new power has been proposed by industry for development between 2007 and 2016.
